The Katie Macdonald Foundation for a Better World is proud to launch Katie's Corner, a program which funds thoughtfully curated books to help teachers open their students' minds and hearts.
This program was inspired by Katie's love of books and her deep desire for a "better world", one that is more compassionate, open-minded and just.
Teachers from Canadian public and independent schools looking to expand their students' awareness and empathy may apply to order books from the Katie's Corner collection for use in their curriculum on Another Story Education's website. The Foundation will provide funding for these books and will also arrange for a limited number of author visits, subject to availability and funding.

The Foundation's criteria for book selection include:
How does the book include people who think they don’t fit in (Characters, Authors)?
What ideas about race, gender, sexual identity, religion, physical appearance or abilities are included?
How does equity and/or equality show up in the story?
In what ways is the book a mirror and/or window? (Empathy and Understanding)
How were the book selection criteria developed?
The Katie Macdonald Foundation for a Better World collaborated with Montcrest School to develop the Katie's Corner program. One of Montcrest's Learning Principles is The EQUITY Principle which states, "We believe that different identities are a source of strength and creativity in a diverse and inclusive community. We are committed to anti-oppression and to dismantling inequitable systems".
With this Principle in mind, it was a natural fit for Montcrest to collaborate with the Foundation on this project. During the 2023/24 school year, a group of interested Grade 6 students joined a club called Katie’s Corner with the aim to work with The Katie Macdonald Foundation for a Better World to create a curated collection of books and a book discussion guide. To achieve this aim, students worked collaboratively with their Montcrest mentor, the Foundation and Another Story Bookshop. They created criteria to evaluate the books and set to work reading as many books as they could. The group then curated the guide as a way to support teachers and students to engage with the books in ways that would promote critical thinking, empathy and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
